RESEARCH & WRITING COURSES

  • Research and Writing (LDRD 500) – 2 credits

    Through this course, students will be able to understand and apply some of the basic research and writing skills. The processes and procedures students learn from this course will be applied to writing their advanced leadership research studies stemming from the Stewardship of Person, Purpose, People, and Possessions. GATL students will follow a publication manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) style in all their writings.

  • Capstone Project in Transformational Leadership (LDR550) – 8 credits

    Field research enables learners to identify, develop, and study an area of interest. The study involves problem analysis and a literature review; the development, testing, and evaluation of a new idea, program, concept, etc.; and the submission of a summary of the process for publication or presentation. The 30-page Capstone Project in Transformational Leadership provides an opportunity to utilize the learning and skills acquired in the GATL program.

MODULE 1: STEWARDSHIP OF PERSON

  • Holistic Personal Leadership (LDRD 511) – 4 credits

    This course is designed to help produce leaders who have a sense of adequate self-awareness, holistic self-leadership, and a life-long view of learning, growing and leading. Using various self-assessment tests, daily journaling, critical reflection, mentoring relationships, observations of personal behavior, and application, students can identify their personal mission statements, core values, and leadership philosophy and develop and implement integrated personal development plans.

  • Character and Leadership Formation (LDRD 512) – 4 credits

    This course focuses on the inner transformation of the learners, equipping them for ethical and honest leadership that is based on deep personal convictions and moral values, good character, and principles of integrity and fairness in decision-making. Moreover, through application of various teaching-learning methodologies, students will be helped to understand and apply the necessary principles and processes of leadership formation from multiple perspectives.

MODULE 2: STEWARDSHIP OF PURPOSE

  • Leading Transformation and Change (LDRD 521) – 4 credits

    This course is uniquely designed for Ethiopian students to help them identify critical challenges that hinder the holistic development of the country and the people of Ethiopia, explore relevant leadership ideas, principles, and strategic solutions toward positive societal change and transformation. In addition, students will examine various examples from around the world on countries that have overcame poverty and led their people on paths of holistic development and apply the lessons toward leading change and transformation in their organizations, communities, and the country.

  • Strategic Planning and Implementation (LDRD 522) – 4 credits

    Through this course students will be able to learn some essential skills of organizational leadership, including the processes of developing and implementing strategic plans, leading change, conflict transformation, collaboration, and teamwork. The course will highlight the importance of long-term planning, adding value to local resources, partnering with others, and increasing organizational effectiveness and productivity.

MODULE 3: STEWARDSHIP OF PEOPLE

  • Leadership Development & Mentoring (LDR 531) – 4 credits

    This course seeks to equip students with the importance and essential skills of developing, mentoring, and multiplying transformational leaders in their organizations and spheres of influence. Students will have opportunities to study the challenges of leadership development, mentoring, and leadership transitions in various contexts. In addition to developing their leadership development skills through structured mentoring, students will examine and understand leadership development theories, analyze perceptions and practices of leadership development in their own contexts, articulate personal philosophy of leadership, and design application strategies.

  • Servant & Empowering Leadership (LDRD 532) – 4 credits

    The most common view of leadership is related to position, power, and prestige. But the servant and empowering model of leadership promotes the attitude and practices selflessness, sacrifice, and making others better. This course is designed to equip students to understand and evaluate the existing leadership paradigm in the world in view of contemporary theory and practice of servant leadership. Students will be engaged in learning and applying essential principles of leadership towards becoming and nurturing servant leaders. The learning process will employ active interaction in classroom, reading, writing, critical reflection, practical application, group projects, case studies, mentoring experiences, and exposure to exemplary leaders.

MODULE 4: STEWARDSHIP OF POSSESSIONS

  • Resource Development and Networking in a Global Environment (LDR 541) – 4 credits

    The course is designed to help leaders develop a strong conviction that nations around the world are endowed with abundant natural resources, but those resources are generally untapped or not maximized. Through this course the students will be equipped with necessary skills to mobilize, manage, and maximize those resources for the benefit of humanity. In addition, students will learn the principles and practices of networking and strategic collaboration as one of the important means of resource mobilization.

  • People, Diversity and Peace as Critical Resources (LDR 542) – 4 credits

    Through this course students will be equipped to investigate the historical, cultural, social, economic, and political environment of a community in their respective nations. The course is intended to help students develop a vision of a holistically transformed nation; recognize, appreciate, and utilize diversity as asset rather than liability; and create and maintain a development culture through building sustaining unity and peace among diverse people; and utilize the power of people toward societal development.
